About

Welcome to my blog, where I share my gardening progress.

I live with my husband, brother, three dogs, and six chickens. We are located a mile high in a town called Central, Utah, located 30 miles north of St.George.

This is the first year in ages that I hope to stay put at home long enough to nurture a garden. Last year I did lots of online research to grow various plants. But it wasn't until I read a comment on zerogov.com that I was encouraged to google the word: "permaculture." I did and I was hooked!

The more I dug, the more excited I got about starting a permaculture-based garden, and life. Most of the teachings made sense because of my varied life experiences. Two examples...

I was a registered nurse, for nine years, so I know that most of the sickness around us is utterly preventable. I know that one of the key factors to better health is quality nutrition. So I know that the cure to most physical problems is in consuming nutrient-dense foods.

I was also a liberty activist for several years. That gave me unique insights into the perils of "statism."

My mindset was ready and eager to accept the teachings of a philosophy that goes beyond the basic mechanics of growing plants. The "father" of permaculture is Bill Mollison, an Australian scholar. He defines permaculture as follows:

"Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than protracted & thoughtless labour; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system."
My discovery and study of permaculture has changed my perspective of my environment and the world around me. I will never see a forest, or a desert, or a jungle the same way. Permaculture complements my views on politics, religion, economics, education, and health.

It is with the permaculture philosophy that I intend to redesign parts of my home and property, to make improvements, and to eliminate waste.

Here's a video that explains well what permaculture is:

I may not be able to change the world, but I can change myself and my environment. And by doing so, I will be looking for ways to help others.

Now that both my husband and I are retired, we have found it necessary to make lifestyle changes to better enjoy life by staying true to what matters most - happiness, freedom, family, health, knowledge, service, and security.

Gardening with permaculture values is the first step. I know I'm very ready. I hope you will follow my progress and participate with your questions, advice, and thoughts.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Roaring for liberty,

TigerLily
